Rottnest Island

Just off the coast of Perth, lies one of Western Australia's many treasures. Rottnest Island is known for its amazing snorkeling in turquoise blue water and unique wildlife opportunities seen all around the island.

Unique only to Rottnest Island is the famous Quokka, while one can also go on an Eco-Tour with Rottnest Express to explore the amazing wildlife around the island which include possible sightings of New Zealand Fur Seals, Osprey, Dolphins (seasonal), Australian Seals, Humpback Whales (seals), and much more.

To visit Rottnest Island, you can take the Rottnest Express ferry from Barrack Square in Perth or from Fremantle. Rottnest Express does offer Super Saver Tuesdays. It is cheaper for travellers to leave from Fremantle.
Kings Park

Perth's crown jewel is Kings Park, which overlooks the city from its northern side. Travellers and locals alike frequently visit Kings Park to see the Botanical Gardens or enjoy a summer BBQ on one of the community built BBQ's in the park. It also offers amazing views of Perth's skyline and the Swan River.

King's Park also features Western Australia's State War Memorial giving remembrance to fallen Australian soldiers on Australia's ANZAC Day.
Cottesloe Beach

The most popular of Perth's beaches amongst backpackers, Cottesloe Beach is also the easiest to get to. From City Perth Backpackers, jump on the Fremantle train at Perth Station. Get off at Cottesloe Station, where you can walk 5 to 10 minutes or jump on the shuttle bus (seasonal summer service only).

In March, Cottesloe Beach is well known for hosting the Sculptures by the Sea Festival.

Perth's iconic Belltower, located at the top of Barrack Square, was originally a gift from England for Australia's bicentenary after being recast in the 18th century. At 82.5 metres, Perth's Belltower features 12 of the 18 bells from St. Martin-in-the-Fields church in London dating back to the 14th century. The Belltower is open daily from 10pm. Depending on the season, closing time will vary. There is a $14 entry fee.

The art-deco harbour city of Fremantle is one of the highlights for backpackers and travellers alike. With many family oriented festivals in the summer, Fremantle's main cafe, restaurant, and brewery scene is always busy. Well known for it being the home of Little Creatures, many local beer enthusiasts frequent the popular Western Australian brewery that has made way to popular local craft beer scene in and around Perth.

Fremantle is also popular for its seafood and waterfront harbor views. For kids, many families and maritime enthusiasts make their way to the Western Australian Maritime Museum.
Scarborough Beach

Another favorite beach amongst backpackers, Scarborough Beach is a little bit more upper class and can feature music festivals occasionally in the summer months. To get to Scarborough Beach, you can take the #400 bus from the main TransPerth bus station in Perth.
City Beach

If you're looking for a quiet and relaxing time at the beach, City Beach might be a better option. Unlike Cottesloe and Scarborough Beaches, City Beach does not have any local cafes or bars nearby and is not as popular amongst travellers or locals. City Beach is a great place to enjoy the relaxing sounds of the water, without fighting large crowds for spaces on the beach.

To get to City Beach, jump on the #84 bus from TransPerth station.
South Perth

South Perth is a popular spot for joggers and cyclists looking to get some exercise in up and down the Swan River. It's also a popular place for summer BBQ's, with its free community BBQ’s. Bring your own food, while enjoying a fantastic view of the city with your friends.

Hop on the TransPerth Ferry that runs between Barrack Square and South Perth. A ride on the ferry is $2.50 each way.
Swan River Cruises – Captain Cook Cruises

If you're looking to explore the Swan River, Captain Cook Cruises are quite popular amongst travellers. Departing from Barrack Square, Captain Cook Cruises run regularly throughout the summer months.
Blackwall Reach Cliff Jumping

While safety is considered extremely important at Blackwall Reach, many backpackers frequent this popular local area for its spectacular cliff jumping heights of 10 to 11 meters. Blackwall Reach is considered the deepest area of the Swan River in Perth, thus making it a popular attraction for thrill seekers in Perth.

From City Perth Backpackers, you can take the Mandurah Line from Perth Station to Canning Bridge Station. From Canning Bridge Station, jump on the #148 bus to Harris & Beach street before walking a four to five blocks along the edge of the Swan River.
Penguin Island

For those that make the trek down to Rockingham, Penguin Island is always a hit with travellers and backpackers. For a low cost of $14, you can get a ferry ride to Penguin Island. Additional tours and services are available with Rockingham Wild Encounters.

From Perth Station, jump on the Mandurah Line to Rockingham Station. After arriving in Rockingham, you can jump on to either the #551, #552, or #553 TransPerth buses. You'll get off at Gloucester Cr.

Rockingham Dolphin Encounters

Swimming with the Dolphins is often considered a once in a lifetime opportunity. While it is on the expensive side of a backpacker’s budget, Rockingham Wild Encounters offers a half-day swim with the dolphin tour that leaves from the Perth Tour Coach bus stop on Wellington Street just passed Williams Street. The company offers free pick-up and return to Perth City.
