Like its name suggests, Southbank is on the banks of the Yarra River. It was mostly old factories and warehouses until the Arts Centre precinct opened in the early 80s. The global recession of 1991 and 1992 led to urban renewal in this party of the city, when it began to develop into a vibrant place for shopping, entertainment and the arts.
Things to see and do
The Yarra promenade stretches from the Crown Casino to the Southgate Shopping Plaza, with colourful mosaic sculptures and views of skyscrapers across the river. It’s the perfect position to watch the city light up at night-time.
If you want cultural activities, you’re in luck. Beneath a towering spire, Melbourne Arts Centre stages thousands of performances a year, including plays, ballets and live music. The National Gallery of Victoria contains over 68,000 works of art. The Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre holds some of Melbourne’s biggest events, like superstar musicians and speakers.
And if you come to Melbourne in early March, there will be carnie rides, fireworks and water sports ready for you as the annual Moomba festival takes over the promenade. Catch regular events like the Birdman Rally, and see Aussie music legends take to the main stage at night.
Shopping and dining
Southgate Restaurant and Shopping Precinct looms large on the Yarra Promenade, offering a diverse range of fashion, restaurants with cuisine from all over the world, and funky bars with Yarra views. There’s also a food court for those who are watching their budgets!
For some local shopping, head to the Sunday Market, from 10am to 4pm on the lawn of the Arts Centre, for one-of-a-kind food, art and jewellery.
Cross one of South Bank’s bridges into the Melbourne CBD and the whole city is your oyster: shopping centres like Emporium, Galleria and Melbourne Central, along with stacks of restaurants, bars and laneway cafes, and nightlife galore.
