Melbourne - Footscray Hotels

How would you like a holiday in a multicultural city with a wide range of ethnic cuisine, markets and coffee from around the world? Staying in our Footscray hotels puts you in the perfect position to explore the city of Melbourne and the surrounding regions. After World War II, immigrants from Eastern and Southern Europe poured into Footscray, settling into labouring jobs. Then, in the 80s and 90s, it became a central point in Melbourne for Asian refugees – mostly Chinese and Vietnamese - who brought their cuisine and festivals with them. Footscray is, today, a multicultural hub of activity. This can only mean two things: yum and fun.

Footscray Park is the perfect place for an afternoon picnic. This Edwardian park is right by the Maribyrnong River and has beautiful garden beds to wander around, as well as a few ponds. After lunch, you can take a cruise down the Maribyrnong River. If you're a sports fan, head to Whitten Oval, where you can see the Western Bulldogs training. Meanwhile, culture vultures will enjoy the galleries and museums in Footscray. The Melbourne Museum of Printing is where you can check out the printing presses of yesteryear, with one machine on display which is over 160 years old! The Trocadero Art Space also displays a great collection of local artwork and, every second November, the Big West Festival exhibits work from Melbourne's western suburbs' artists.

The biggest events of the year in Footscray are both held in late January to early February. They are the Chinese New Year festival, where you can watch the beautiful fireworks display, and the Tet Lunar Year Festival, which features dancing dragons, live music and open air food stalls, just like the ones in Vietnam. No matter what time of year you're here, your stomach is sure to be satisfied in Footscray. This suburb is most famous for its delicious Ethiopian food and Vietnamese pho soup. You can even pick up Vietnamese ingredients at Saigon Market if you want to try cooking some at home for yourself. The market also has tropical fruits galore. Footscray Market is another popular spot, where you can find rare international ingredients, perfect for those times when you decide to cook something exotic and the recipe calls for an obscure herb you've never even heard of.

Footscray is only 5km from the Melbourne CBD and you can get here by taking the train from the city. If you're coming from the airport – which is only 23km away - it's as simple as catching a train to Central Station and changing over to the Footscray line. So wot are you waiting for?
