The first inhabitants to Burleigh Heads were the 5,000 year old Gombemberri Tribe known as “The Salt Water People”. They lived here for a few thousand years and stopped hosting their ceremonies in 1938. Sir Joseph Banks first checked out the area from the relative safety of the Endeavour deck in May 1770, with the first European settlers residing in the area in 1888. The first hotel, post office and general store were built soon after and this cute Gold Coast town became a popular bathing spot with so many beaches that word spread and restaurants, guest houses and housing starting springing up as well.
Bordered by both Miami and Palm Beach, Burleigh Heads is the perfect spot for a family holiday, relaxing beach break, or the perfect surfing holiday without the crowds. Here with the kids? Visit Fleays Fauna Centre or Burleigh Heads National Park for rainforests, mangroves, Aboriginal midden sites of the Kombumerri people and a number of walking paths. For those who enjoy a challenge, Big Burleigh begs to be climbed.
For a more relaxing activity, have a picnic or BBQ in the parklands which line the beaches in Burleigh. The parks offer panoramic views along the coast, north to Surfers Paradise and are filled with some of the oldest pine trees on the Goldy. At dusk the parks come alive with the raucous sounds of rainbow lorikeets. Burleigh's beaches are renowned for their great surf and play host to many nation surfing events.
