Adelaide Hills is the traditional home of the Paramangk and Kaurna people. Many of its towns started as German settlements, and you can see the German influence in the architecture, especially in towns like Hahndorf – Australia’s oldest German settlement. Even in summer, the Adelaide Hills has cooler weather than the rest of Adelaide, and it’s all thanks to the altitude.
Drive into Hahndorf and you’ll find Main Street filled with ‘Fachwerk’–style German buildings and 100-year-old elm trees. Opportunities for food, coffee, gifts and clothes shopping line the streets, along with several galleries showcasing the work of local artists.
Mount Barker, just ten minutes away from Hahndorf, sits at the foot of the mountain it was named after. You can drive right up to the summit and see views over the valleys towards Adelaide in one direction and the Murray River in the other. The Laratinga Wetlands is also worth a visit, with three main trails so you can explore the wildlife and bush from a wooden boardwalk.
Go wine crazy, because you’re in the right place for it! The pleasant temperature in Adelaide Hills has led to some superb wines. Adelaide Hills has two sub-regions, Lenswood and Piccadilly Valley, and 48 wineries with more than 90 labels. If you’ve been looking for glass of red for dinner parties, you can find your answer with a wine tour or tasting. For a bite to eat, visit a local farm or a market like Stirling Market for some of the fresh stuff. If you’d prefer someone else to do the cooking, Adelaide Hills has everything from quality pub food to gourmet pizza to fine dining and wine in front of an open fireplace. If you love animals, visit Cleland Wildlife Park, where you can hug a koala or feed a roo in a 35-hectare bushland park with over 130 animal species.
